Information about STEREO-A close approach to Earth, August 2023

Parker Solar Probe perihelion, 26 February 2022

This figure shows the orbital configuration of STEREO Ahead (red) during the perihelion passage of Parker Solar Probe (orange) centered on 26 February 2022. The positions of Parker Solar Probe are plotted at one day intervals during the period when it is within 0.25 AU of the Sun. The sense of motion is counter-clockwise. During this short period, the motions of STEREO and the planets are negligible in the Heliocentric Earth Ecliptic coordinate system which follows Earth's orbital period. Radial alignment and magnetic connectivity between the two spacecraft both occur close to perihelion.

Orbital plot

Note that the projected location of STEREO Behind is also plotted. However, that spacecraft is not currently operational. Follow this link for more information.

The following figures show the progression of Parker Solar Probe through the fields of view of the STEREO/SECCHI telescopes. The images are simulated, based on data from earlier in the STEREO mission.
